Employment
- I am over 20 and have no earned income: you have to pay contributions as a non-working person.
- I am under 25 and my mother or father receives an old-age or invalidity pension : my mother or father can apply for an OASI or DI children's pension for me.
- My father or mother has passed away and I am under 25: You are entitled to an orphans' pensio.
- Despite being entitled to an orphans' pension, my income is too low to cover my basic expenses: You might be entitled to supplementary benefits.
- You might be entitled to financial grants. Contact your community of residence.
- I am gainfully employed: have you already registered your child for the education allowances?
- I receive an old-age or invalidity pension: have you already registered with the compensation office for receipt of the children's pension ?
- I am a solo parent and the other parent of the child receives an old-age or invalidity pension: the parent entitled to a pension can apply for an OASI or DI children's pension .
- The father or mother of my child has passed away: you or your child (if he or she has reached the age of majority) can apply for an orphans' pension.
Employees pay OASI/DI/EO and ALV-contributions. Self-employed people do not pay any ALV-contributions, as they are not insured against unemployment.

The EO (income compensation allowance) regulates the loss of income for persons who do military, civil defence or community service. The EO also pays loss of income in case of motherhood (maternity benefit), paternity leave (paternity benefit) as well as child-care benefits for parents who have to interrupt their working activity for the care of their minor child who suffers from heavy health problems.

Marriage can affect the entitlement to or the amount of a benefit. If you receive any of the following benefits, it is important to inform us if you get married:

Women are entitled to 14 weeks' maternity leave in accordance with the Swiss Code of Obligations as well as a maternity benefit pursuant to the Erwerbsersatzgesetz (Income Compensation Act).
They receive 80 per cent of their average earned income before the birth for a period of 14 weeks, but no more than CHF 220.00 a day.
Paternity
They receive 80 per cent of their average earned income before the birth for a period of 14 weeks, but no more than CHF 220.00 a day.
If the new-born has to be hospitalized for at least 14 days directly after birth, the duration of the maternity allowance paiement can be extended by the duration of the hospitalization not exceeding 56 days (up to a total of maximally 154 days). This right is reserved to women who pursue their gainful activity after the maternity leave.
From the 1st of January 2021 two weeks of paternity leave are allowed for fathers at the birth of their child. The allowance is 80 percent of your gross salary subject to AHV contributions before birth or maximally 220 CHF per day.

Parents who have to interrupt their working activity for the care of their minor child who suffers from heavy health problems either due to illness or accident, have a right to receive child-care benefits of 14 weeks.

DI - Disability Insurance
The benefits are 80 percent of the salary before the beginning of the right of child-care benefits. Maximally 98 daily allowances are paid within a qualifying period of 18 months. If both parents are entitled to benefit, they can split the receipt of benefits (for example 2 x 49 days).

Like the OASI and health insurance, the Swiss disability insurance (DI) is a compulsory Switzerland-wide insurance. The aim is to protect the livelihood of insured persons by means of integration measures or monetary benefits if they become disabled.
Who is deemed to a non-working person?
Persons who have no or only a small earned income are deemed to be non-working. Such persons include:

- Recipients of DI pensions or daily cash benefits in case of illness
- Divorced or widowed persons without employment
- Spouses of retired persons
- Students over 20

What consequences does a divorce have?
A divorce results in income splitting. When it comes to calculating the old-age or invalidity pension of divorced persons, the incomes which the spouses earned during their marriage are split in half. It is advisable to submit the income splitting application immediately after the divorce.

Early retirement - what should I do?

In order to ensure that no contribution gaps occur and that a full pension can be paid later on, people who retire early must pay OASI, DI and EO contributions as non-working persons. To pay your contributions as a non-working person, contact the OASI office of your most recent employer or if your spouse already receives a pension from another one, contact that office using the following form :

The pension can be brought forward by 1 or 2 years, but it will be reduced accordingly. The obligation to pay contributions will continue even if the pension is brought forward.

The old-age pension can be drawn flexibly between 63 and 70. Women of the transitional generation (born between 1961 and 1969) can continue to draw their pension early at the age of 62. In addition to the option of a monthly early withdrawal or deferral, a partial early withdrawal or partial deferral (the proportion must be between 20% and 80% in each case and may also be stated in Swiss francs) can also be applied for, as well as a combination of both. During the entire term between the ages of 63 and 70, you have the opportunity to change the early withdrawal or deferral percentage once.
